John Williams to speak at Berkshire Museum

PITTSFIELD– John Williams, composer and laureate conductor of the Boston Pops, will speak at the Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield on Tuesday, August 24, at 2 pm. His talk, entitled “Composing for Film,” is the finale of the series “The Joys of Tanglewood, presented by the Tanglewood Association of the Boston Symphony Association of Volunteers and the Berkshire Museum. Host for the series is Martin Bookspan of PBS’s “Live at Lincoln Center.” Tickets are $12 ($10 for Tanglewood Friends or Berkshire Museum members). To order tickets, call 413-443-7171 extension 10. Williams’s music can currently be heard in the new Steven Spielberg film, War of the Worlds. The Academy- and Emmy-award-winning composer has created the music for more than 100 films, including Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, the three Indiana Jones films, and the six Star Wars movies. Williams was conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra from 1980 to 1993 and is artist-in-residence at Tanglewood. Series host Martin Bookspan is best known as “the voice of Lincoln Center,” a role he has had since the first Live from Lincoln Center broadcast in 1976. He is the author of 101 Masterpieces of Music and Their Composers and Consumer Reports Reviews: Classical Recordings. The Berkshire Museum is located at 39 South Street on Route 7 in Downtown Pittsfield, Mass. The galleries, presenting art, science, and history, are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. Currently on view are the special exhibitions The Power of Place: The Berkshires and Wit and Wine: A New Look at Ancient Iranian Ceramics from the Arthur M. Lanesborough Fifth-Graders Win Snowplow Name Contest

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — One of the snowplows for Highway District 1 has a new name: "The Blizzard Boss."
 
The name comes from teacher Gina Wagner's fifth-grade class at Lanesborough Elementary School. 
 
The state Department of Transportation announced the winners of the fourth annual "Name A Snowplow" contest on Monday. 
 
The department received entries from public elementary and middle school classrooms across the commonwealth to name the 12 MassDOT snowplows that will be in service during the 2025/2026 winter season. 
 
The purpose of the contest is to celebrate the snow and ice season and to recognize the hard work and dedication shown by public works employees and contractors during winter operations. 
 
"Thank you to all of the students who participated. Your creativity allows us to highlight to all, the importance of the work performed by our workforce," said  interim MassDOT Secretary Phil Eng.  
 
"Our workforce takes pride as they clear snow and ice, keeping our roads safe during adverse weather events for all that need to travel. ?To our contest winners and participants, know that you have added some fun to the serious take of operating plows. ?I'm proud of the skill and dedication from our crews and thank the public of the shared responsibility to slow down, give plows space and put safety first every time there is a winter weather event."
