Sandisfield - The Sandisfield Arts Center has awarded its Phase II renovation job to Cardan Construction, Inc. of Pittsfield. "We are excited to be a part of this restoration project," said Daniel J. Francese, President of Cardan Construction. The job includes repair of the original granite foundation and water table, insulation, creation of fire exits, staircases to code, new handicap accessible bathrooms, new front entrance, reinforcement of sanctuary floor, handicap accessible seating and a handicap lift to bring people to the upper level. Local Project Coordinator Liana Toscanini added: "This project is the biggest undertaken to date and completes the stabilization effort to save our historic 1839 building." Toscanini said the roof and the belfry were restored in 2000. Both projects received funding from the Massachusetts Historic Commission Preservation Services Fund. Said Toscanini, "We could not have undertaken such preservation efforts without the help of the Massachusetts Historic Commission and matching donations from individuals." Future plans include the restoration of the upper level, landscaping, and painting of the building's interior and exterior. The master plan for the rehabilitation of the entire building was created by The Architecture Team of Pittsfield. Jerry Herman, Chairman of the Sandisfield Arts Center's restoration committee said the total cost of renovations will approach $400,000.
