Papa Grows Funk
North Adams - On Friday and Saturday, February 3 and 4, MCLA’s Patrons of the Arts Series will create its own February thaw with a Blues & Funk Festival at the Church Street Center in North Adams. Events begin at 8 p.m. both nights. The festivities begin on Friday with the Queen City’s legendary blues and funk band, Papa Grows Funk. The winner of Offbeat Magazine’s Funkiest Band award for 2004, Papa Grows Funk combines a steaming Hammond, chinky guitar and wailing sax with a rhythm section. Adding to the performance will be Berkshires blues favorite, Misty Blues. On Saturday, the program will feature the Michael Hills Blues Mob - straight from New York City bringing with it torrid musicianship, brass tack songwriting, and a gritty sense of heart and humanity. The Conor Meehan Blues Quartet will round out the night. MCLA’s acclaimed Jazz Band will open both nights. Guests are invited to a post-performance jam at Gideon’s Nightery on Eagle Street on both Friday and Saturday. Admission for MCLA’s Blues & Funk Festival is $10 per evening or $15 for both, $3 for faculty and staff. Patrons and students are free. Before the show on Saturday night, the Patrons of the Arts will host a Cajun-inspired dinner for $30 per person for Patrons, and $35 per person for non-members. For reservations or more information, call (413) 662-5543.
