Winners announced for the 24th Annual “A Closer Look at the Berkshires” calendar contest

Ten individuals have been announced as top winners in the 2008 “A Closer Look at the Berkshires” photography and art contest sponsored by the Quality Printing Company, Inc. of Pittsfield announced John G. DiSantis, CEO and president. The contest and calendar will celebrate its 24th year in 2007. The top twelve images chosen are displayed in the company’s full-color calendar. This years contest had 110 contestants who entered over 1200 images to be considered for the calendar. Judges for the 2008 competition were: Paul Rocheleau of Richmond, Jane McWhorter of Great Barrington and Joel LiBrizzi of Pittsfield. All three are professional photographers and have served as the judges of the contest for the past 24 years. Margareta Thaute of Alford was awarded the top prize of $250 for her image of a barn with flowers taken in Sheffield that will be used for the month of August. Robert Colantuono of North Adams won the second prize of $200 for his image of the island at Pontoosuc Lake in Pittsfield that will be used for the month of March. Robert Behr of Williamstown won the third prize of $150 for his image of the Green River in South Williamstown that will be used for the month of September. The runner-up winners of $50 were Mark Baldridge of Glendale; Jeffrey Sotek of New Lebanon, NY who had two images; Betsy Strauch of Lenox; Barbara Brady Conn of South Deerfield; David Haust of Chatham, NY; Bruce MacDonald of Adams and Peggy Braun of Lenox who had two images chosen. Thirteen contestants had images chosen for the honorable mention section: William Abele of Richmond; Joseph Strauch of Lenox; Ann Kotowicz of Pittsfield; Elizabeth Norton of Housatonic; Allan Pospisil of Windsor; Mary Ellen Foster of Alford; Mick Garrold of Great Barrington; Anne Bartini of Lenox; Daniel Morgan of North Adams. Also, Conn, Colantuono, Haust and Braun each had an honorable mention as well. These selections are published in the calendar but do not receive a monetary prize. All participants in the contest receive a complimentary calendar. Quality Printing Company is a full service graphics and printing company located in Pittsfield in a 30,000 square foot facility. The company provides single to eight-color perfecting and digital sheetfed printing, bindery and mailing to various businesses, industries, non-profits and educational institutions throughout the Northeast.

Cyclists Pedal Into Berkshire Bike Month

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Clad in helmets and bright colors, more than 20 people gathered in Park Square to kick on Berkshire Bike Month on Wednesday.

The month of May will be stacked with bicycle-centered events throughout the county — beginning with an eight-mile loop from the city's center that ends at Hot Plate Brewing Co.

"We have we have a lot of things going on in Pittsfield for bicycles and for safety," Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales said.

"We're not anywhere near where we should be. We have a lot of work to do."

Bike month is meant to promote the safe use of streets for anyone and everyone no matter how they are traveling, he said The commissioner is especially excited about Bike to Work Day on May 17, as he can register to be recognized for his typical commute.

He presented a proclamation to President of the Berkshire Bike Path Council President Marge Cohan. It states that the city is committed to the health of its citizens and environment, safe cycling with road bike lanes and the extension of the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, and that the Police Department encourages safe cycling by distributing lights and helmets and accompanies the city's Ride Your Bike to School event.

BBPC is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Cohan said the quarter century has been full of commitment to bike paths and bike safety throughout Berkshire County "on roads, on trails, on tracks, and on paths."

"In expanding our mission in this way we have been able to encompass all kinds of cycles and all kinds of riders," she said.

She noted that participants range from babies to 90-year-old people. Bike month includes events for all ages.
