Take Your Heart For A Walk With The Heart Association - August 27, 2007
2007 Berkshire Heart Walk: Calling all Businesses and Survivors
The Berkshire Heart Walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Heart Walk is the hometown celebration of the American Heart Association’s Start! walking program and honors heart disease and stroke survivors. Local companies and organizations are encouraged to sign up and support the walk and the fight to end heart disease and stroke, the region’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers. respectively.
This year’s Heart Walk is expected to have more than 500 walkers – including many heart disease and stroke survivors – for the 3-mile jaunt at Wahconah Park in Pittsfield. The event begins with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10. The 2006 Heart Walk raised more than $80,000 to fight heart disease and stroke.
“The Heart Walk is about celebrating success and inspiring hope throughout Berkshire County,” said John Bissell, chairman of the 2007 Heart Walk and senior vice president of marketing and administration at Greylock Federal Credit Union. “We invite all local businesses to sign up and support a good cause.”
The Heart Walk is part of a larger initiative called Start!, a corporate wellness and walking program run by the American Heart Association. According to a Harvard study, adults gain two hours of life expectancy for every hour of regular exercise. Walking for as little as 30 minutes a day provides heart health benefits
The national sponsors for the 2007 Start! Heart Walk are Subway, Healthy Choice and Astrazeneca. The local presenting sponsor is Berkshire Health Systems. Local media partners include The Berkshire Eagle, WBEC AM/FM, iBerkshires.com and Lamar Outdoor.
Local companies interested in the Start! program or in participating in the Berkshire Heart Walk, should contact Rick Macdonald at 413-735-2103 or visit www.berkshireheartwalk.org to sign up.
