MCLA Golf Classic to Honor Richard Syriac '71

- September 07, 2007

on file
NORTH ADAMS - On Monday, Sept. 17, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will host the 11th Annual MCLA Golf Classic at Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This year’s tournament will honor Richard Syriac, class of 1971.

A four-year player on the men’s basketball team, Syriac also played on the golf team during his sophomore and junior years. As center for the basketball team, he was selected to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference All-Star team three of his four seasons on the court, made the All-New England Team during his sophomore season, and was the basketball team MVP during 1965-66 and 1967-68. At the end of his basketball career at the college, he had accumulated enough points to be distinguished as the college’s all-time career scoring leader, a record he held until the mid-1980s.

Syriac was an inaugural member of the MCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He remains an avid golfer, having won several notable titles over the years, including the North Adams Country Club Invitational Singles Championship in 1994.

Sponsors of the MCLA Golf Classic include Coakley, Pierpan, Dolan and Collins; Follett; Time Warner; Adams Co-Operative Bank; Aramark; Arrow Press; Hoosac Bank; Kelly’s Package Store; Maxymillian Technologies; Petricca Industries Inc.; South Adams Savings Bank; Blackinton Place Condominiums; Nancy Curtis ’62; Smith Brothers-McAndrews Insurance Agency; Beck’s Printing; Berkshire Direct; Berkshire Gas; Berkshire County sheriff’s office; Committee to Elect Daniel Bosley; Sen. Christopher Speranzo, D-Pittsfield; Smith Watson and Co. LLP; Stanley’s Lumber and Building Supplies Inc., and Vallone’s Automotive Repair.

Registration and a barbecue lunch begins at 11 a.m., with a shotgun tee-off slated for noon. A reception and dinner, featuring a raffle and auction, will begin at 5.

The cost is $150 per person. Complete foursomes or individuals are welcome. The fee includes a $65 tax-deductible contribution to the MCLA athletics program.
