NORTH ADAMS - On Monday, Sept. 17, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will host the 11th Annual MCLA Golf Classic at Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This year’s tournament will honor Richard Syriac, class of 1971. A four-year player on the men’s basketball team, Syriac also played on the golf team during his sophomore and junior years. As center for the basketball team, he was selected to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference All-Star team three of his four seasons on the court, made the All-New England Team during his sophomore season, and was the basketball team MVP during 1965-66 and 1967-68. At the end of his basketball career at the college, he had accumulated enough points to be distinguished as the college’s all-time career scoring leader, a record he held until the mid-1980s. Syriac was an inaugural member of the MCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. He remains an avid golfer, having won several notable titles over the years, including the North Adams Country Club Invitational Singles Championship in 1994.
