Family Fun Day Planned at Heritage Park

NORTH ADAMS - The annual Family Fun Day Celebration will be held Sunday, Sept. 23, at Western Gateway Heritage State Park as part of the Fall Foliage Festival. Admission is free. The events are sponsored by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Mayor's Office of Tourism and Northern Berkshire United Way. The children's road race kicks off the event at Joe Wolfe Field, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. The race is open to boys and girls 11 years of age and younger. Trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in each division and ribbons will be given to all participants. Children and their families can participate in numerous family-oriented activities, game giveaways and information from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at Heritage Park. Entertainment and low-cost food and refreshments will be available. Activities include Smokey Bear, the Fire Safety House, Berkshire Share with Oobleck goop and a mystery guest, pony rides offered by Equus Therapeutic, United Cerebral Palsy with spray-bottle art and temporary tattoos, Northern Berkshire Community Action with a tic-tac-toe game toss, Adams Youth Center with posters and Kids Care ID sponsored by Rent-a-Center on State Road. There will also be a number of booths that provide business opportunities for parents. Other participating organizations include Papyri Books with a children's book sale, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, North Adams Historical Society with Grandma's Attic, Dr. Francine LaJoie with scoliosis screening, Reach Community Health Foundation, Brien Center with balloon creations, Northern Berkshire Creative Arts, Northern Berkshire Beekeepers Association, Early Intervention, Berkshire North WIC and Women's House of Peace with peace cranes. Berkshire Fly Fishers will present a casting demonstration. Entertainment will be provided by the Adams Turners Gymnastic Club at 1 p.m. The musical group Caribbean for Kids will perform at 1:30. Western Gateway Heritage State Park is located on Route 8 between State and Furnace streets.
