WILLIAMSTOWN - The Skidmore College men's golf team took home the 2007 Williams Invitational title Sunday afternoon completing their second round at Taconic Golf Club in 299, four shots off their first day total of 293, posting a team score of 590. Skidmore won the event going away with a 17-shot margin of victory on the field of 18 teams. Host Williams moved up from fourth place after day one and finished second with a team score of 299 on Sunday, nine shots better than yesterday. The Ephs two-day total was 607. St. Lawrence moved up from eighth place after Saturday's opening round to capture third place with a Sunday score of 301 and a two-day total of 311. Skidmore's Tobin Spector took top individual honors by posting an even par round of 71 Sunday and his two-day total of 143 was one shot better than Castleton State's Bryan Smith who also fired a 71 on Sunday. Skidmore's Sam Dasilva finished in a tie for third with a two-day total of 146, after posting a 74 on Sunday. Chris DeJohn also posted a second straight strong round and fired a 76 today to finish in a tie for seventh pace at 149. Senior co-captain Brendan Conley who carded a 72 on Sunday and a 148 for the tourney, which placed him sixth in the field, led Williams. First year Jack Killea shot a 76 on Sunday and his tourney total of 150 tied him for ninth overall. First-year Drew Murray shook off an opening round of 80 and contributed a 75 on Sunday. Both junior Tyler Zara and first-year Bob Camp scored 76 on Sunday and they, along with Murray finished at 155 for the tourney. "We played much better today and our players really hung in there for the entire round," said Eph head coach Rick Pohle. "Several players got off to tough starts, but gathered themselves to produce some great scores today. I think we are progressing very nicely as a team - learning to compete and developing a better understanding of competitive golf. I knew we had the capability, but was unsure how quickly it would surface." The St. Lawrence surge from eighth to third was led by Chris Mudge who carded a two over par 73. Mudge was support by Ben von Reyn who fired his second consecutive 75. Wes Ballantyne added a 76 and Max Davis shot a 77. Next up for the Ephs is a midweek encounter at the Castleton State Invitational on Wednesday before heading to Hamilton on the weekend for the NESCAC Tournament.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
