Williams Loses to Springfield in OT, 3-2

- September 27, 2007

SPRINGFIELD - The Williams College women's field hockey team succumbed to Springfield's second-half pressure, loosing their second game, 3-2 in overtime. Springfield College (7-2) overcame its OT loss against Babson on Saturday, dropping the Ephs record to 5-2.

Williams turned around their previous habits, coming out strong in the first half but unfortunately slowing down towards the end of the game. "We had a very strong beginning", said head coach Alix Rorke.

Meighan McGowan stick handled around the goalie to score the first goal of the contest with 28:44 left in the 1st half. Followed by a goal from Cary Bearn, assisted by Jess Overlander with 6: 59 left in the first half.

The Ephs didn't sit out the rest of the first half easy, as Springfield's Brittany Veazie scored with just under 2 minutes left in the half.

The overconfident Ephs went into the 2nd half up 2-1. The Springfield Pride then "capitalized on the sloppier play" of the Ephs according to Rorke. Springfield midfielder Jane Kelleher tied up the game with 27:59 left in the 2nd half.

The Ephs lasted 11:51 into overtime when Brittany Veazie scored her second goal of the game off a scramble in front of the goal.

Springfield goaltender, Emma Kaplan made 16 saves while sophomores Bethany Baker and Lindsey Jones split the game for Williams. Baker made 2 saves in the fist half while Jones made 5 saves in the 2nd half and overtime.

Williams out shot Springfield 18-11 and had 17 penalty corners to Springfield's 6.

Coach Rorke was not pleased with the Girls performance, "we unraveled in the second half," Rorke said. "We need to learn to increase our lead throughout the game and play more together."

Part of the issue, she thought, was because of a lack of leadership on and off the field, which could be partly due to Senior Carolina Jolly's injury in the 2nd half.

The Ephs play in Hartford, Conn., against Trinity College at noon on the 29th. "We've got a lot of work to do…but hopefully we can turn it around against Trinity" said Rorke.
