State Awards $40K to Pittsfield Development Group - October 11, 2007
PITTSFIELD - The Massachusetts Department of Business and Technology’s Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship has awarded the Pittsfield Economic Revitalization Corp. a $40,000 technical assistance grant, according to state Sen. Benjamin B. Downing, D-Pittsfield, and state Rep. Christopher N. Speranzo, D-Pittsfield.
"By providing assistance in all areas of business development, PERC has become a valuable resource for small local businesses," said Downing. "I am pleased that the department has recognized the impact of PERC’s services and awarded this funding."
In 1982, PERC was established as a community development corporation to encourage and support economic development through the growth and expansion of small businesses in Pittsfield and Berkshire County. This is primarily accomplished by providing alternative business loans and technical assistance programs through a contract with the city of Pittsfield that is funded with the city’s annual Community Development Block Grant and other sources of funding including the Small Business Technical Assistance Grant.
Speranzo said, "These funds will help the PERC board provide technical assistance grants that are so vital to growing our small businesses here in Pittsfield."
In 2007, the Small Business Technical Assistance Grant Program awarded more than $1.6 million statewide. This year, approximately $830,000 will be disbursed to provide technical assistance or training programs to businesses with 20 employees or less. Grants are awarded to community development corporations, community development financial institutions or non-profit community-based organizations assisting small businesses to grow and retain jobs.
Jay Anderson, president of PERC said, "PERC is very encouraged that the state has made a commitment to continue to support our Technical Assistance Grant Program with an additional $40,000 grant from the Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. These funds will allow PERC to really make an impact in the assistance it can provide to growing small businesses, which will enable them to move their projects forward and ultimately create more jobs." |
