Albany, NY – Albany Pro Musica, led by Artistic Director and Conductor David Griggs-Janower, today announced the first concert of its 27th season, Autumn Landscapes, to be performed Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21.
Featuring a cappella selections from around the world, an Albany Pro Musica specialty, the concert will feature music from the 16th to the 21st century, from Renaissance sacred music to works of today’s most important choral composers. Audience members will be treated to the evocative musical delicacies of Estonian composer Veljo Tormis’ Autumn Landscapes, two of Morten Lauridsen’s madrigal “Fire Songs†on Italian Renaissance poems, Nils Lindberg’s lush setting of the poplar Shakespeare sonnet “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?â€, and Margery Make the Tea, by APM’s own Steve Murray as well as many other delightful pieces.
APM will be joined by the 120-voice Capital District Youth Chorale, directed by Diane Warner, in this direct-to-the heart celebration of unaccompanied song. CDYC will perform a set by itself, then join APM for the concert finale, in the moving Anthem of Peace, arranged by Mack Wilberg. (The audience will sing along in the final chorus – sheet music will be distributed!) Those who have not had the opportunity to hear the CDYC will be truly amazed at the talent of this young group.
Autumn Landscapes will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Albany and on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 3:00 p.m. at the new GE Theatre at Proctors in Schenectady. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
