Graphic poster retrospective coming to MCLA Gallery 51 - October 16, 2007
A retrospective of graphic design work created by Leon Peters, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts’ graphic designer for nearly 40 years, will open in MCLA Gallery 51 on Thursday, Oct. 25, and run through Nov. 25.
At least 40 of Peters’ works will be on display in “Posters, Etc.” An opening reception will be held in the Gallery, from 5 to 7 p.m., on Oct. 25. The event is free and open to the public.
Employed by the College since 1970, Peters first worked in the media center and later in the television studio. In 1977, he established what was to become MCLA’s graphics department. Over the years, Peters has produced hundreds of posters, starting with his first silkscreen poster (Roller Skating Party) in 1979.
Between 1985 and 1994, Peters sometimes designed and printed as many as four posters a week. These posters were so popular on campus that they had to be slashed to prevent people from removing them before the events they featured happened.
By 1996, the demand for other types of graphic materials, such as magazines, brochures, and logos, had grown to such an extent that Peters was forced to limit the production of silkscreen posters to five or six a year. In the summer of 1998, he stopped producing them altogether. Today, Leon still designs and prints posters in-house, producing them with an inkjet printer.
Peters has received numerous awards for his posters, including a silver medal from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and a first place award from the American College Unions Association District One Division.
In addition to making posters for MCLA, Peters has designed and printed posters for exhibits at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, the Williams College Museum of Art and for events at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA).
Peters and his wife, Vanda Warner ’79, live in Whitingham, Vt. They have three daughters and four grandchildren. MCLA Gallery 51 is at 51 Main St., North Adams. The Gallery is open daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, 413-664-8718, or go to www.mcla.edu/gallery51 |
