State Police Participate in 'Operation Safe Driver'

- October 19, 2007

The state police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be participating in "Operation Safe Driver" beginning Monday, Oct. 22.

The nationwide, weeklong enforcement and education blitz focuses on unsafe driving practices by both commercial and passenger vehicles. The goal of the program is to increase public awareness about truck blind spots, safe stopping, following distances and increased seat-belt usage.

The CVES will be employing new "Distance Between Car" LIDARs that possess a proven speed detection technology and a new algorithm that allows the detection of tailgaters, said state police. These devices will be employed in high-crash corridors in order to reduce commercial vehicle crashes. Massachusetts is one of the first states in the country, and the first state in New England, to utilize this advanced technology in an effort to reduce tailgating, which is a common causes of crashes and is a precursor to road rage.
