Candidates' Forum Slated Next Week

NORTH ADAMS - Voters will get a chance to hear City Council candidates' positions on various issues at a forum broadcast live by Northern Berkshire Community Television Corp. on Tuesday, Oct. 30. "We usually would go and videotape forums held by other organizations, like the League of Women Voters, but we hadn't heard of any happening," said David Fabiano, executive director of NBCTV. So the cable-access station decided to hold its own forum at its studio in Western Gateway Heritage State Park. The moderators will be Glenn Drohan, editor of the North Adams Transcript, and Paul Hopkins of Northern Berkshire Healthcare, a former news broadcaster at WMNB radio. Viewers will be able to call-in during the live show that will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Because of limited telephone lines, residents are urged to e-mail questions to NOBCTV@bcn.net . Fabiano said e-mail was a more efficient way to allow more people to participate. All 12 candidates are reportedly planning to attend: challengers Eric Buddington, Lisa Blackmer and Howard D'Amico, and incumbents Gailanne Cariddi, Michael Bloom, Richard Alcombright, Clark Billings, Ron Boucher, Robert Moulton Jr., Christopher Tremblay, Alan Marden and Marie Harpin. This year's election has generated little heat between the 12 candidates for the nine City Council slots. No major issues have arisen and the lack of a challenger for Mayor John Barrett III, running for his 13th term, has led to a lackluster campaign season. There have been no forums, debates or campaign events. "This will give an opportunity for local candidates to give their views and for people to see them and ask questions," said Fabiano. The election is Tuesday, Nov. 6. The taped forum will be repeated at various times throughout the week leading up to election day.

Sanford, Maine, Edges SteepleCats in Season Opener

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The SteepleCats Sunday started their 2026 season the way they ended their 2025 campaign: with a narrow loss to the Sanford Mainers.

Sanford, which won a best-of-three playoff series against North Adams last August, scored four runs on 14 hits to earn a 4-2 win at Joe Wolfe Field.

The Mainers broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run rally in the third inning, and four Sanford pitchers combined to collect 11 strikeouts as the visitors improved to 2-1 this summer.

North Adams, which saw its planned road opener rained out on Saturday, got to open the season in front of its home fans.

And those fans saw a strong performance from the North Adams pitching staff, which, despite allowing 14 hits, including five doubles, gave up just three earned runs.

“I like the grit,” SteepleCats coach Mike Gladu said of his team’s Game 1 performance. “I thought the pitchers performed pretty well. We had a couple of situations where we definitely should have gotten some runs in and didn’t get that hit.

“And there were a couple of plays with a little rust. Certainly, the ball that was hit over [Evan] Meier’s in left field, he just mistracked that one. And the extra run they scored in the eighth, the kid wasn’t going to go [from third on a fly ball], we made a throw and nobody could stop it.
