Seminar Set on Elder Abuse - November 12, 2007
PITTSFIELD - The Berkshire district attorney's office in collaboration with Elder Services of Berkshire County Inc., is sponsoring a seminar on elder abuse and neglect.
More than 150 people have signed up to attend the daylong session, which will be held at the Country Club of Pittsfield on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Police officers, fire department personnel, emergency medical technicians, health department employees and council on aging members will listen to a keynote address from Dr. Holly Ramsey-Klawsnik, a nationally-recognized consultant and expert on elders and elder abuse. There will also be presentations on protective services/home-care issues, hoarding/cluttering and a panel discussion on local response resources.
"As baby boomers begin to reach retirement age our elderly population is going to increase dramatically. We need to reach out to those who will come in contact with our senior citizens and train them to watch for signs of neglect, abuse or health care issues," said District Attorney David F. Capeless. "These are cases that are under-reported, particularly by the victims themselves. This tragic situation needs to be reversed.”
He said this seminar is a first step in achieving those goals.
The seminar will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information contact the district attorney's office at 413-443-5951. |
