Bosley Pushes Regional Transportation AwarenessStaff reports - November 15, 2007
BOSTON – Two Western Massachusetts legislators are pushing for lawmakers to weigh in on regional transportation issues with the formation of a legislative caucus dedicated to the topic.
Rep. Daniel Bosley, D-North Adams, and Sen. Stan Rosenberg, D-Amherst, announced Wednesday that they are forming a Regional Transportation Authority caucus in an effort to educate their colleagues, including 80 representatives and 27 senators who have regional transportation authorities in their districts, about upcoming issues related to public transportation services.
"RTA funding affects our ability to provide transportation to people with no other way of getting around, workers dependent on a ride to work, and people who cannot afford today's gas prices. It is imperative that we have a system that can serve our citizens," said Bosley.
"It's no exaggeration to say that the lives and livelihoods of a lot of people, especially in rural areas, depend on safe, reliable public transportation," Rosenberg said. "Roughly two-thirds of all Massachusetts communities are served by RTAs, adding up to about 25 million rides a year. This is an important service that simply cannot be taken for granted."
Some of the issues the caucus would take up immediately are Senator Rosenberg's multi-year plan to increase RTA funding by $90 million and restore services to pre-fiscal crisis levels and Bosley and Sen. Harriette Chandler's, D-Worcester, bill that would reduce rates on RTA borrowing. The caucus would also focus on budget requests for RTAs, energy issues and insurance rates.
