NORTH ADAMS - The city will mark the holiday season with the annual Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m. when Mayor John Barrett III throws the switch to light up the downtown.
There will be seasonal carols and a singalong with vocalist Diane Maynard and the Drury High School band, directed by Carl Jenkins. The lighting will be followed by the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus on the North Adams Trolley, bearing goody bags containing candy canes, coloring books, modeling clay and crayons for the first 500 children.
The event is free and open to the public. The emcee will be Paul Hopkins, director of community relations at Northern Berkshire Health Care.
For the comfort of the crowd, the First Baptist Church will be open from 5 to 6:30 p.m., offering free hot chocolate and coffee. Its restrooms will also be available during that time. The church will hold a spaghetti supper to benefit Camp Ashmere from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and children under 12 years of age. Tickets are available at the door or at Papyri Books at 45 Eagle St.
The First Congregational Church Youth Group will also have hot chocolate available on the church lawn at 134 Main St.
The trolley will operate a free route, weather permitting, from 6 to 8 p.m., with stops on Eagle, Main and Ashland streets and at Western Gateway Heritage Park.
The following events and activities will be available at the celebration:
● North Adams Antiques at 49 Main St. will be open until 7 p.m.
● The Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' Gallery 51 will be open until 7 p.m. and, at 7:30, the gallery will play host to the Railway Cafe with a performance by Vance Gilbert. To reserve a spot, call 664-6393.
● Crafty Creations at 59 Main St. will be open extra hours as well and will hold a free drawing for a gift basket, valued at over $100. The drawing will be held Dec. 7.
● At Moulton's General Store, Santa Claus will be on hand to greet children from 6 to 8 p.m. and shoppers can enjoy free food samples including candy and fudge.
● At 85 Main St., McClelland's Gifts will remain open for holiday shoppers until 8 p.m.
● Persnickety Toys will hand out old-fashioned candied orange slices and sugar plums to the first 50 shoppers from 6 to 8 p.m.
● Papyri Books at 45 Eagle St. will be open until 8 p.m., discounting all new merchandise by 10 percent.
● The Dragonflii Clothing Co., at 48 Eagle St. will be open until 8 p.m., featuring 20 percent off all clothing.
● Dilego's Jewelry Store, 16 Ashland St., offers ongoing specials throughout the store, up until Christmas.
● Staples, Peebles Department Store and Olympia Sports, all in the Steeple City Plaza, will be open until 9 p.m.
● The North Adams Museum of History and Science, located in building 5A at Heritage Park, will be open late for tours and browsing in the gift shop.

SteepleCats Fall in Extra Innings

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Ocean State Waves scored four runs in the top of the 11th and went on to a 9-6 win over the SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Jack LaRose went 3-for-5 with a double in the game-winning rally.
North Adams (1-9) had a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the 10th.
With the game tied, 5-5, Nelphie Lopez started the inning with a sacrifice bunt to advance Bobby Stang, the "ghost runner," to third base. Ocean State (3-8) then intentionally walked the next two hitters to load the bases with one out.
Waves reliver Andrew Jacobs then got a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.
Jacobs struck out a pair and allowed one unearned run in the bottom of the 11th in three innings of work to earn the win.
North Adams used five pitchers. Joe LaPrade struck out a pair and allowed no runs in two innings of work.
