Murdock Renovation Wins Design Citation - December 12, 2007
NORTH ADAMS – Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts recently was recognized for its "Outstanding Design" in the renovation and modernization of Murdock Hall in American School and University magazine's architectural portfolio 2007.
According to the magazine, "The renovation restores the college's landmark building to its original purpose, an
academic building housing classrooms, while preserving its treasured historic elements. Through the use of modern interior design, the main common area has been transformed into the highly visible, grand space envisioned originally."
The magazine describes itself as the sourcebook for award-winning and outstanding education design. Since 1928, American School and University of Overland Park, Kan., has served as an information source for education facilities and business professionals. It serves the nation's K-12 and higher-education administrators responsible for the planning, design, construction, retrofit, operations, maintenance and management of education facilities.
The Murdock Hall interior renovation was designed by Design Partnership of Cambridge, which submitted photos to American School and University. The photos were taken by Randall Perry Photography of Albany, N.Y., and included shots of both the exterior and interior spaces of Murdock Hall. They were published in the magazine's November 2007 issue.
Built in 1894 as the North Adams Normal School, Murdock Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The $8.6 million renovation of the 51,105-square-foot building were completed in October 2006. Murdock Hall houses classrooms with advanced presentation capabilities, computer labs, seminar suites and conference facilities.
The renovation was managed by the state's Division of Capital Asset Management with Souliere and Zepka Construction of Adams doing the construction work.
