WILLIAMSTOWN - Williams College senior back Nathan Elwood of Andover, N.J., was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Scholar All-America College Division Team. Elwood was the only player from New England named. He was previously named to the College Division ESPN The Magazine District I All-Academic Men's Soccer First Team. Elwood majors in biology, holding a 3.83 grade-point average, and is the lone Eph field player to start in all 19 games this season. He netted two goals and assisted on two more. Elwood has started 44 of the 68 games he has played at Williams as a four-year letterman. He has tallied three goals and recorded seven assists for 13 points. Elwood helped stabilize an Eph backline that lost three starters, including the NSCAA National Player of the Year to graduation. Williams allowed just 21 goals in 19 contests this season and compiled a 12-5-2 mark. Despite suffering heavy losses to graduation that included eight starters from the 2006 team, the 2007 Ephs advanced to the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament – "Sweet Sixteen" – for the second year in a row. Elwood was also named Second Team All-New England by NSCAA/adidas, Second Team All-NESCAC and to the NESCAC All-Academic Team. Ryan Pelletier, a four-year letterman from York, Maine, made a successful switch his senior year to midfield from having played three years on the Eph backline and earned All-NESCAC First Team honors and Second Team NSCAA/adidas honors. Pelletier started 72 of 73 games he played at Williams and, this fall, was second on the team in goals scored with four and in assists with three. He has notched six goals and added 18 assists for 30 career points. Senior forward Kit Fuderich of Founex, Switzerland, and junior midfielder Sam Empson of Washington, D.C., also collected Second Team All-NESCAC honors. Both Fuderich and Empson notched four goals on the year and Empson contributed two assists. Fuderich played in all 19 games this season, while Empson appeared in 15.

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
