More Snow
The Berkshires received several inches of snow this morning, but not enough to close schools, unlike yesterday's sleety mess. Temperatures will drop into the 20s this afternoon. A few more snow showers are expected through the weekend. |

Williams 7th First Day at Bates Winter Carnival - January 14, 2008
RUMFORD, Maine – The Williams College Nordic ski team is in seventh place with 90 points after the first day Friday of the three-day Bates College Winter Carnival, the first contest of the 2008 Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association winter carnival season.
Defending NCAA champion Dartmouth College is the current leader with 176 points, showing first-place performances in the women's 5K free technique as well as the men's 10K free technique races. Dartmouth won the women's race as a team while fourth-place Colby College finished with the most points in the men's race. In second place is Middlebury with 150 points and University of New Hampshire follows in third with 133 points.
In the women’s 5K free technique Nordic race, Alice Nelson was the top finisher for Williams, finishing in fifth with a time of 13:28.5. Other top performers from Williams include Kirsten Johnson, finishing 25th with a time of 14:14.8, Alessandra Demarchis, 36th with a time of 14:31.1 and Fiona Worcester who finished 37th in 14:32.6.
Top men's finisher in the 10K free technique for Williams was Mark Johnson, who finished in 23rd place with a time of 24:05.4. Finishing 33rd was Evan Dethier with a time of 24:26.8 while Alex Taylor was 37th in 24:31.9. Also a top performer for Williams was Sam Kapala, tying for 47th place, 24:50.9, with Thomas Stark from Middlebury College.
Women's team captain Natalie Joffe said, "It was a really positive start and the team can only get better from here; we looked really strong and have a lot of potential."
Men's captain Sam Kapala complimented the skiing of Dethier, Johnson and Taylor on the men's side and Nelson on the women's side.
Kapala commented on the tough weather conditions, "The weather was a bit funky with a mix of snow and rain which made visibility tough but the snow was packed and overall the Williams team looked better than any other team."
Because of the relatively warm and rainy weather conditions, the Alpine ski events at Sunday River in Bethel have been pushed back one day. Saturday's events will include the men's and women's slalom as well as the men's and women's 10K classic Nordic races at Black Mountain in Rumford. The Bates Winter Carnival will conclude on Sunday with the giant slalom at Sunday River.
