Civil War Program at the Milne Library - January 25, 2008
The David & Joyce Milne Public Library is pleased to present the final program in the series of living history characters portrayed by Robert Campanile on Wednesday January 30th at 7 p.m.. As the recent film, A Night at the Museum brought characters in the museum alive – this program will allow you to spend the night at the library and see this historical character come alive! Colonel Robert Gould Shaw - Equal in Death… the 54th Mass. Infantry,
In July of 1864, twenty-six year old Robert Gould Shaw, the commander of the Union Army’s vanguard black regiment, the 54th Mass Infantry, gave his life for the cause of freedom. His spirit will once again be resurrected as the Colonel reads from his letters written during those trying times of the Civil War. His own words, both fascinating and insightful, often reveal a man very different from the Shaw depicted in book and film. One Gallant Rush, by deceased local author Peter Burchard was the inspiration for the film Glory starring Matthew Broderick that depicted Shaw’s historical saga.
