Lorrain Acquisition Subject of Clark Lunchtime Talk
WILLIAMSTOWN - The 16 drawings by 17th-century French landscape artist Claude Lorrain that were acquired by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute last year are the subject of the next Looking at Lunchtime Talk on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 12:30.Richard Rand, senior curator at the Clark, will lead this free half-hour gallery talk.
The acquisition has made the Clark holder of one of the most important collections of Claude drawings outside of Europe. They represent the full breadth of Claude's draftsmanship, including works made as early as 1630 and as late as 1667.
The collection features nature studies of Rome and Tivoli and other identifiable sites, generalized landscape views, and studio drawings with historical subjects that were made as studies for paintings, as well as independent works of art. Claude's technique and combination of materials are fully represented as well.
The series continues on Thursday, March 13, with Cody Hartley, assistant curator of American Art, discussing Winslow Homer's "Sleigh Ride." The talks take place at 12:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month. Attendees may purchase food from the courtyard cafe or bring a bag lunch to enjoy before or after the gallery talk.
The Clark is at 225 South St. The galleries are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 to 5; admission is free through May. For more information, call 413-458-2303 or visit www.clarkart.edu
