Viol concert with Lucy Bardo at Simon's Rock - February 19, 2008
GREAT BARRINGTON – Viol players Lucy Bardo and Marie Dalby will perform at the Kellogg Music Center of Bard College at Simon’s Rock on Sunday, March 16 at 3 p.m.
Bardo, Collegium Director at Simons Rock, and Marie Dalby formed the duo FOR TWO UPON TWO VIOLS in 2006 in order to explore the rich repertoire of the l7th and 18th centuries for two bass viols. They will perform music of Sainte-Colombe, Johannes Schenck, and Daniel Pinkham, as well as pieces from 17th century England, and will be joined by members of the Simon’s Rock Collegium in a Pavan by Anthony Holborne.
The viol or the viola da gamba is a bowed six or seven-string instrument, which emerged in the late 15th century and became a family of string instruments distinct from that of the fiddle or violin. The viol is always played sitting down. It was the string instrument of choice in European courts, houses of nobility and the upper classes in the l6th and l7th centuries.
Bardo and Dalby will discuss the music and their instruments and talk about how viol playing became an important part of their lives. The concert will be free and open to the public. |
