Immigration Workshop - March 11, 2008
Did you know that 1 in 7 residents of Massachusetts was born in another country? Did you know that as the population of Berkshire County declines, immigrants play an increasingly important role in our workforce and our economy? Did you know that all immigrants pay sale taxes and property taxes and the large majority pay income taxes? These questions and many more will be addressed in the Cross Cultural Action Network's (CCAN) workshop on March 20, 2008 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church, 88 South Street, Pittsfield. Hilary Greene and Brooke Mead of the Berkshire Immigrant Center will discuss the main issues surrounding immigration both on a local and national level. The workshop will explore the myths and realities of immigration, the demographics of Berkshire's growing immigration population, give an overview of the "ABCs" of immigration law, discuss national legislation, and share community resources. Attendees will learn about the many challenges our immigrant neighbors face, and what the U.S., Massachusetts and the Berkshires ultimately gain from our new neighbors, coworkers and friends. The event, which is part of CCAN's bimonthly meeting is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. Please use the side entrance of the First Baptist Church near the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank. CCAN is an informal network of individuals and organizations that support immigrants and other minority groups in the Berkshires. The group is committed to making the Berkshires a welcoming community through events, advocacy and education. Members include the Human Service Forum, Manos Unidas, Adult Learning Center, Adult Literacy Committee of Berkshire County and Berkshire Immigrant Center.
For more information, please contact Brooke Mead at (413) 445-4881. |
