Lanesborough School Budget Up 5 PercentLanesborough News - March 23, 2008
LANESBOROUGH — The School Committee held a special meeting on Wednesday, March 19, to discuss next year's budget, which is up 5 percent over this year.
The overall budget is $2,775,154; it will require an appropriation from the town of $2,485,967, an increase of 6.04 percent over this year.
Committee's discussion on Wednesday focused on expense line items; the board voted to increase the following items:
The professional development budget by $12,000.
Technology supplies from $600 this year to $20,000 next year for network infrastructure repairs and improvements and a proposed laptop initiative for the upper grades.
The field trip transportation budget from $8,000 to $10,000.
Operating and maintenance costs were increased almost 11 precent because of energy costs and the average teacher's salary is projected to increase 4 percent, from $59,381 to $61,739.
Grants, school-choice and tuition revenues are expected to decline from $362,778 to $289,187, or 20 percent.
The School Committee will formally vote on the budget for next year on Thursday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at the school.
The School Committee also reported it is continuing to work hard to come to an equitable agreement with the teachers' union and hope to finalize a contract soon.
Board members said there is no plan to reduce the teaching staff, with the possible exception of changes in special education staffing to reflect changes in the needs of the student population.
They warned that there may be pressure to reduce school expenditures because of the decreases in income from grants, tuition and school choice, but reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for the funds necessary to fully support the educational programs.
