Eclipse Mill Gallery Posts 2008 Schedule - April 06, 2008
NORTH ADAMS — The artist-run Eclipse Mill Gallery at 243 Union St. has announce its 2008 schedule of exhibitions, which will run from Memorial Day weekend through the holidays. Since the Eclipse Mill was developed as living and studio space, its gallery has been widely viewed as a valued resource for exhibitions and related arts events.
The season has a number of highlights, opening with what is hoped to be an annual event — Berkshire Salon. To initiate the ambitious concept of serving as an exhibition venue for Berkshire artists, this inaugural event is intended as an open invitation for regional artists to participate.
Because of space limitations artists are asked to send for an application and prospectus. Those who wish to participate should mail a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Berkshire Salon, CO River Hill Pottery, Unit 104, 243 Union St., North Adams, MA 01247.
There is a donation of $15 per applicant to cover the costs of the exhibit. Inclusion in will be based on the order in which completed applications are received. Artists may drop off their work, ready to be installed, from 11 to 5 on May 17 and 18. The hanging will begin as soon as works are delivered.
Based on the interest and response to Berkshire Salon, the 2009 exhibit may be a juried selection. For this first project, all works of suitable size and content will be exhibited as space permits.
Also this season are "Off the Wall: Art of the Eclipse in the Third Dimension," June 27 to July 27; "Passing Through This World," Aug. 1 through 31' "What's So Funny," Sept. 5 through Oct. 5; the Eclipse Mill Group Show, Oct. 10 through Nov. 16, including the citywide Open Studio events, and "Small Works/Holiday Show," Nov. 21 through Dec. 28.
Berkshire Salon
May 23 through June 21; opening Friday, May 23, 6 to 8 p.m.
This is an unjuried exhibition open to Berkshires-based artists. The work will be hung in the traditional salon style. The intention is to provide an overview of what is being created in the region and to create an opportunity for a number of artists to show their work. The nature of the exhibition is eclectic and inclusive. This is a means for the artists of the Eclipse Mill to reach out and welcome the surrounding community.
Participants are urged to apply to be assured of inclusion. Artists are requested to deliver their work ready to be installed from 11 to 5 on May 17 and May 18. Prospectus and application are available at www.eclipsemill.com or send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Berkshire Salon, C/O River Hill Pottery, Unit 104, 243 Union St., North Adams, MA 01247
Off the Wall: Art of the Eclipse in the Third Dimension
Curated by Brian Jewett and Brian Handspicker June 27 through July 27; opening, Friday, June 27, 6 to 8 p.m.
This exhibition will present three-dimensional works, including a number of wall reliefs as well as objects on pedestals. The range of work will combine fine arts, sculpture and crafts. Many of the pieces will explore notions of vessels and containers. The artists are residents of the Eclipse Mill.
Pennie Brantley and Robert Morgan: Passing Through This World
Curated by Jane Herman Aug. 1 through Sep. 1; opening Friday, Aug. 1, 6 to 8 pm.
The artist couple Pennie Brantley and Robert Morgan have widely shown their work nationally and internationally. They are realist painters who often draw inspiration from views encountered during their extensive travels. Morgan and Brantley were for many years members of the Bromfield Gallery in Boston. They have titled their exhibition to allude to the physical and psychological journeys their work represents.
What's So Funny
Curated by Charles Giuliano Sept. 5 through Oct. 5; opening, Friday, Sept. 5, 6 to 8 p.m.
This exhibition explores the theme of irony and humor in contemporary art. Some of the works are literal cartoons while others represent the comic as an element of the intention of the artists.
Eclipse Mill Group Show
Oct. 10 through Nov. 16; opening Friday, Oct. 10, 6 to 8 p.m.
The annual group exhibition of Eclipse Mill artist residents is intended to be a part of the Open Studios, which is conducted in North Adams. This exhibition will open a week prior to Open Studios and will be on view during the related events. The gallery exhibition will help to guide Open Studios visitors to the works of specific residents in the building; the selection of work will serve as a preview of what is presented on the other floors. The full range of Eclipse artists will be included from painting and sculpture to crafts, photography and works on paper.
Small Works/ Holiday Show Nov. 21 through Dec. 28; opening Friday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The last exhibition of the 2008 season will focus on small works and affordable art and crafts. There will be works by Eclipse artists and invited guests. |
