For any of you who missed it last year, the first annual Fall Foliage Charity Bed Race made its maiden voyage down Main Street in North Adams.

Supporters and curious citizens turned out in great numbers. The event is designed to raise much-needed funds for various organizations throughout Berkshire County.

Well, it's time to start thinking about this year's race. I know fall may seem far off and it may seem odd to talk about autumn at this time of year, but just ask anyone who was involved last year and they will tell you it pays to plan early.

The race will take place Oct. 4 at noon sharp on Main Street. I am not going to go into the details here because the fine folks at Boxcar Media have developed a Web site for you to visit.

You can get all the information you need to participate in the race this year at www.iberkshires.com/bed_race. You can find everything from rules and registration forms to sponsor information and there are even pictures from last year to give you ideas of what the race looks like.

The entry fee will again be $125 per five-person team. All proceeds this year will benefit Northern Berkshire Healthcare. Several sponsors have joined the efforts and donated items to the race committee for prizes.

Central Radio and Appliance Center is the event sponsor and provides trophies for the race winner as well as medals for all participants. Various merchants like the Mountain Goat, State Street Tavern, Jacks' Hot Dogs and Subway, just to name a few, have donated merchandise and gift certificates. If you would like to be a sponsor for this year's race you can e-mail the committee at foliagebedrace@hotmail.com.

<L2>A very integral part of the race's success is volunteers. It takes a lot to plan the event and to run the event on race day.  Event organizers can use all the help they can get. If you would like to volunteer to help this year you can e-mail to the address above.

Volunteers are needed on race day to help with things like registration, handing out T-shirts and to deliver water to racers, as well as be race officials.

The board of directors this year is comprised of myself as president and co-chairman; Janeen Flagg, treasurer and co-chairman, and Jill Drummond and Amy Merselis. We would like to thank everyone who helped make last year's event a success and appeal to everyone to join us this year and make it even better.

Join in the fun and make a difference.

Dalton Day Returns This Saturday

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — The town's popular Dalton Day festival is returning this weekend after a year's hiatus.

The event will kick off this Saturday at 11 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. in the field in front of the Senior Center.

The community celebration was established in 2023 by the Cultural Council in an effort to increase resident participation at town meetings while also showcasing the area's welcoming, diverse, artistic and sporty atmosphere. In 2024, the event brought together 300 residents.

"The primary mission of Dalton Day is to foster a strong sense of community, build civic pride, and bring residents together through a shared celebration of local culture, music, and food," said Jeannie Ingram, Select Board member and cultural council chair, and Lori Venezia, executive assistant to the town manager.

The event provides an accessible and free platform for "civic education, community bonding, and supporting local businesses, artisans, makers, and culture more broadly," they said.

The festival strengthens the fabric of the town both civically and economically by connecting grassroots organizations with residents, fostering a shared sense of belonging, and providing free, family-friendly entertainment.

It also serves as an opportunity for community members to meet with local officials and a couple of state officials. State Sen. Paul Mark and state Rep. Leigh Davis will be coming from Beacon Hill to speak at the event.
