Good Turnout for Scholarship Breakfast

By Anita Calderwood and Al Hartheimer - April 20, 2008
Lanesborough News

LANESBOROUGH — More than 100 people attended the scholarship breakfast at the Elementary School on Sunday, April 13.

The breakfast was one of the many fundraising activities of SALNA, or Scholarship America of Lanesborough/New Ashford. The breakfast of fruit, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausages and pastries was served by high school juniors and seniors.

In addition to breakfast, there was a Chinese auction with many colorful prizes and a very interesting display of artwork by students of the school. It was a delightful community get-together.

SALNA has been raising money for scholarships for more than 45 years. Last year, $12,020 was raised. Almost all the money raised, about 97.5 percent, goes to the scholarships.

Any graduating senior who lives in Lanesborough or New Ashford may apply, regardless of which school he or she attends. The awards are based on the amount of time and effort the student and an accompanying adult have volunteered to support SALNA activities, not on need.

SALNA sponsors many fundraising activities throughout the year, including an annual plant and bake sale on the Saturday before Memorial Day, a wreath and bake sale on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and many other events.

To volunteer, contact Anita Calderwood at mom12852@aol.com. To support the scholarship fund, write a check and send it to SALNA in care of Anita Calderwood, North Mountain Road, Lanesborough, MA 01237.
