Health Documentary to Screen at Mass MoCA

- June 18, 2008

This event is full; no further reservations are being accepted at this time - Edited June 20, 2008

NORTH ADAMS — State and local health agencies are sponsoring a screening and panel discussion of the documentary "Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?" on Tuesday, June 24, at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts.

The first hour of the four-hour documentary, which explores racial and socioeconomic inequities in health, will be shown. It is being offered by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in collaboration with the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition and Reach Community Health Foundation, the community health arm of Northern Berkshire Healthcare.

The panel discussion will address related local health issues and opportunities for taking action. It will feature Dr. Lauren Smith medical director of the state Department of Public Health; Dr. Douglas Karrel of Adams Internists; Al Bashevkin, executive director of NBCC; and Deborah Simmons, executive director of Reach Community Health Foundation. The panel will be moderated by Maria Basescu, vice president of external affairs for Northern Berkshire Healthcare.

"Unnatural Causes" is described as a "groundbreaking documentary." The episode to be screened on June 24, "In Sickness and In Wealth," portrays how the social conditions in which we are born, live and work profoundly affect our health.

"We hope many members of our community will take the time to join us for dinner and the movie on Tuesday night," said Bashevkin. "This is an important topic that looks at some of the very real causes of poor health, and what we might do about them."
