Sports 'N Stuff: Did Someone Say Title Town?

Well, another parade is over. Another championship is in hand. And now another banner will hang in the city that has become the new "Title Town."

Boston is the "undisputed heavy-weight champion of the world." If there was ever a fan base that had bragging rights, I think we found it.

The Boston Celtics are your 2008 NBA Champions and rightly so. As though my column after Game 1 inspired them (funny right), they took the reins and rode off HARD into the sunset, leaving a trail of dust for the L.A. Lakers to choke on. It's not that the Lakers were bad, the Celtics were just ridiculous.

I am not going into stats. You can read those in any box score. I am also not going to break down players and defenses and offenses.

What I am going to do is say that for those of us who are fans of other than Boston/hometown teams, it is time to acknowledge that these fans have been right all along. Let's face it their team is better than ours!

They have taken over major sporting championship. The Patriots (um, you remember those guys, right?) have brought umpteen Super Bowl titles recently. The Boston Red Sox are the defending champs in Major League Baseball and look like the champs again this year. Now the Cs have shown up after 20-plus years without a title and will be hanging their 17th NBA championship banner.

What the heck is going here? Oh yeah, and have you ever heard of Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards or Matt Kenseth?  They just happen to be NASCAR drivers from Roush Fenway Racing and Edwards and Kenseth are perennial contenders for NASCAR's championship, now called the Sprint Cup. They are even taking over racing ... .

So what are we to do? The fans of teams not from Boston are now the minority and it looks like we will be waiting for awhile. The Sawx and the Pats are still championship quality and if the Celtics return everyone next year, they will be just as formidable as this year. I guess we will just have to wait it out for awhile.

So move over Green bay ... there's a new Title Town, USA. Step aside Detroit and San Antonio and Los Angeles, the Cs are back. And as much as it pains me to say this — watch out New York. Boston never sleeps either — they might miss another championship.

Dalton Day Returns This Saturday

By Sabrina DammsiBerkshires Staff
DALTON, Mass. — The town's popular Dalton Day festival is returning this weekend after a year's hiatus.

The event will kick off this Saturday at 11 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. in the field in front of the Senior Center.

The community celebration was established in 2023 by the Cultural Council in an effort to increase resident participation at town meetings while also showcasing the area's welcoming, diverse, artistic and sporty atmosphere. In 2024, the event brought together 300 residents.

"The primary mission of Dalton Day is to foster a strong sense of community, build civic pride, and bring residents together through a shared celebration of local culture, music, and food," said Jeannie Ingram, Select Board member and cultural council chair, and Lori Venezia, executive assistant to the town manager.

The event provides an accessible and free platform for "civic education, community bonding, and supporting local businesses, artisans, makers, and culture more broadly," they said.

The festival strengthens the fabric of the town both civically and economically by connecting grassroots organizations with residents, fostering a shared sense of belonging, and providing free, family-friendly entertainment.

It also serves as an opportunity for community members to meet with local officials and a couple of state officials. State Sen. Paul Mark and state Rep. Leigh Davis will be coming from Beacon Hill to speak at the event.
