Berkshire Opera Opens 2008 Season
PITTSFIELD — Berkshire Opera's thrilling 24th season will commence in Great Barrington on July 11. The label "Uncharted Territory" is an apt one, for this 2008 season marks the introduction of a number of new developments and new directions for the company."Uncharted Territory" refers to so much more than just the company's first season under its new artistic team of Ryan Taylor, general director and Kathleen Kelly, artistic director. The term also alludes to the sheer scope of artistic and geographical terrain covered, with an unprecedented variety of programming at venues spanning Berkshire County, in Pittsfield, Lenox, Great Barrington and Williamstown. It also acknowledges exciting new artistic collaborations with organizations like The Clark, Barrington Stage, the Emily Dickenson Museum, the Southeastern Festival Song, and The Dynamics, a vocal acapella ensemble from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Another feature new to this Uncharted Territory is "Backstage Buzz," discussion panels with artists and the public moderated by General Director Ryan Taylor. Taking place a few days prior to each new performance, these talks will provide in depth, behind-the-scenes looks at our unique schedule of concerts and productions. The first "Backstage Buzz" will take place Tuesday, July 8 in the Clark Room at Jae's Spice in Pittsfield, at 4 p.m..
The creative journey into Uncharted Territory begins at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on July 11, with "Women on the Verge," a experience in vocal storytelling that explores some of the most compelling characters in theatrical music. This new concert presentation, conducted by Maestra Kathleen Kelly and featuring the Berkshire Opera Orchestra, brings together the vocal talents of local superstar soprano Maureen O'Flynn, French mezzo-soprano Marie Lenormand, American tenor Scott Scully, and internationally renowned bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi. "Women on the Verge" was recently named one of the "Top 10 Picks of the Summer Arts Season" in the June issue of The Women's Times.
Prior to the concert, Berkshire Opera cordially welcomes its supporters and friends in the community to an Opening Night Soirée at Pearl's Restaurant in Great Barrington, to take place at 5:30 p.m.. Call to make a reservation for this event at 413-442-9955
