North Adams unable to complete comeback effort 10-6

Chad Cooper
North Adams SteepleCats
08:45AM / Wednesday, July 23, 2008

The North Adams SteepleCats twice battled back from three runs down, but were unable to complete the effort as they fell to the Torrington Twisters 10-6.

Torrington plated a run in the bottom of the first inning as Corey Shimada, who had walked, came in to score on a wild pitch from Nick Serino. A couple of walks later, with runners on first and second, Jonathan Cluff singled into left with the ball getting by Brian Adams, plating Jimmy Rivas and Chase Austin for a 3-0 Twisters edge.

North Adams came back with a run in the top of the second. With Ryan Delgado on third and two outs, Ryan Semeniuk lined the first pitch he saw back through the middle for a hit, scoring Delgado, cutting the lead to 3-1. With runners on first and second in the second inning, Delgado laid down a perfect sacrifice moving the runners up to second and third. Greg Van Horn hit a grounder to second, scoring T. J. Greig to slice the Twisters edge to 3-2.

After Torrington took a 4-2 lead on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, the SteepleCats would come back in the fifth. With one out, T. J. Greig walked and Jonny Smith singled. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Ryan Delgado came up and singled through the left side scoring Greig, once again cutting the lead to a run. Greg Van Horn came to the plate and knocked a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Smith and tying the game at 4-4.  It would be a brief lead, however, as Torrington would score two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead.

The SteepleCats would battle back again in the seventh as with two outs, Van Horn drilled his third homerun of the season to left, cutting the lead to 7-6. As was the tone of the evening, however, the Twisters bounced right back as Jaren Mathews homered in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-6 Torrington. A pair of eighth inning runs for the Twisters gave the 10-6 final.

Clay Caufield (1-1) picked up the win for Torrington with Greg Robinson (1-2) taking the loss for North Adams.

The SteepleCats have one more game away from North Adams on their five game road trip before returning home for two in a row against Pittsfield and Newport. Tomorrow at Danbury, All-Star Tim Boyce (6-1, 1.06) will get the start for the SteepleCats.
