BECKET – Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival presents a double bill of two vastly different and unique female choreographers in the Doris Duke Studio Theatre August 14 to 17. This exclusive engagement features the four-member Kate Weare Company in the world premiere of Bridge of Sighs, a work that was co-commissioned and partially created during a Creative Development Residency at the Pillow. Maureen Fleming, an internationally acclaimed artist known for her unique voice and sculptural movement, performs three solos revealing the beauty of the human body including The Stairs, with live piano accompaniment by Peter Phillips.

“These are two terrific and completely different dance-makers.  Kate's dance language is smart and passionate: mind and body with a punch; while Maureen's is quietly mesmerizing and transformative. I asked these two amazingly original choreographers and performers to present this program especially for the Pillow, and I hope many people will take advantage of this one-time dance event,” comments Ella Baff, Executive Director of Jacob’s Pillow.

Weare is known for her integration of sound and movement; dancers slap, push, stomp, spank, and bang, creating a secondary score of sorts with their bodies and the performance space. During her residency at the Pillow, Weare commented on the work as a study of, “…how relationships shape us, how love can be painful but powerful shaping forces for us. It’s not always painful but also passionate and ecstatic. Over time, we remain ourselves through these many different kinds of interactions and yet we become shaped as well.”

Maureen Fleming, a New York City-based performance artist who encompasses a new evocative interpretation of Japanese Butoh dance will perform three solo works in her Pillow debut.  The New York Times wrote, “She seemed to transcend the material world and enter a realm of pure spirit…wondrous choreographic metamorphoses.” In Sphere, Fleming explores circular shapes created with her body, ranging from the fetal position to a human sphere. In The Stairs, Fleming melts down a huge, steep staircase to a score by Philip Glass, performed live at the Pillow by pianist Peter Phillips. The program includes partial nudity.

Kate Weare Company and Maureen Fleming will perform excerpts of their work in a preview on Inside/Out at the Marcia & Seymour Simon Performance Space, August 13 at 6:30pm, free and open to the public. Pittsfield Council Passes $232.7M Budget

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council unanimously approved a $232.7 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

It is a modest, almost 2.9 percent increase from FY26.

"I do want to give the community kind of a heads up as we move forward on budgets. What we see coming out of the federal government that's trickling down to the states, it's going to be harder and harder for us as a community to meet our needs under the Proposition 2 1/2," Councilor at Large Alisa Costa said.

"We're going to have challenges, as we've seen communities across the state trying to override the Proposition 2 1/2, because we have dwindling amounts of money coming from the state and federal government."

She pointed out that, at the same time, utility bills are going up for both residents and the city, as are the costs of pavement and other items.

The amended budget of $232,777,720, down from the $232,782,090 originally proposed, includes cuts to the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the restoration of funds for councilors to attend the annual Massachusetts Municipal Association conference.

The Pittsfield Public Schools' $86,855,061 budget includes $68,886,061 in state Chapter 70 funding and $18 million from the city. With $345,000 in school choice and Richmond tuition revenues, it totals $87,200,061 and is an approximately $300,000 increase from the Pittsfield Public Schools' FY26 budget of $86.9 million.

The district's budget will fund 13 schools, as Morningside Community School will retire in the fall, and includes the middle school restructuring.

Councilors also approved the use of $2 million in certified free cash to reduce the tax rate, and appropriated $450,551 for parking-related expenditures.
