Dancer Lawrence Goldhuber Performs Sleeping Giant

- August 05, 2008

NORTH ADAMS - Actor-dancer-choreographer Lawrence Goldhuber has made a career of defying expectations. Sleeping Giant, his newest work with company BIGMANARTS, is no exception, blending live music by Tin Hat, video by Janet Wong, visual art by Daniel Duford and dance together into one stunning performance. Goldhuber and company will be in residency at MASS MoCA for two weeks putting the finishing touches on Sleeping Giant before its world premier on Saturday, August 23, at 8PM in MASS MoCA's Hunter Center.

The MASS MoCA galleries will stay open until 7 p.m. the night of the performance. Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times calls Goldhuber's work "first-rate theater with a surprising edge of poignancy," and Roslyn Sulcas, also of The New York Times, marks Goldhuber as "a witty, touching dance-maker."

Sleeping Giant is an allegorical warning about the myth of America. From small-town values to adventures in empire, the piece revolves around twin brothers: the Superhero and the Sleeping Giant. One goes off to fight an unpopular war only to come back maimed and disillusioned, while the other becomes rooted in the ground to become a powerful underground force.

In addition to choreography by Goldhuber and live music by Tin Hat, Sleeping Giant features seven dancer/performers, video by Janet Wong, costumes by Liz Prince, sets by Gregory L. Bain, and lighting that is a character on its own by Robert Wierzel. Sleeping Giant was developed in part during the 2007-2008 Artist-in-Residence Program at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, New York City.

Tickets for Sleeping Giant are $19. The galleries will be open until 7 PM on the night of the performance with special discounted admission for ticket-holders. MASS MoCA members receive a 10% discount. Tickets are available through the MASS MoCA Box Office located off Marshall Street in North Adams, open from 10 AM to 6 PM every day. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling 413-662-2111 during Box Office hours or purchased on line at www.massmoca.org.
