"Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?" to be donated to public libraries - August 07, 2008
NORTH ADAMS - Copies of the documentary film “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?” will be donated to the Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Florida, North Adams, Savoy and Williamstown public libraries. The donation of the DVDs was made possible through funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
The Department of Public Health in collaboration with the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition and REACH Community Health Foundation, the community health education arm of Northern Berkshire Healthcare, presented the documentary in late June to an invited group at MASS MoCA.
The first hour of the four-hour documentary that explores racial and socioeconomic inequities in health was screened. Following the screening a panel discussion addressed related local health issues and opportunities for taking action. The panel featured Lauren Smith, M.D., Medical Director of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health; Douglas Karrel, M.D., Adams Internists; Al Bashevkin, Executive Director of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition; and Deborah Simmons, Executive Director of the REACH Community Health Foundation.
“Unnatural Causes” is described as a “groundbreaking documentary.” The episode screened in June, “In Sickness and In Wealth,” portrays how the social conditions in which we are born, live, and work profoundly affect our health.
“We hope many members of our community will take the time to view this movie,” said Bashevkin. “This is an important topic that looks at some of the very real causes of poor health, and what we might do about them.”
The DVDs will be presented to local libraries on Thursday, August 14 by REACH personnel.
