CHESHIRE — A Pittsfield woman was killed late Thursday night on Route 8 after her bicycle was hit by a motor vehicle.
Valerie E. Senger, 49, of Pittsfield was riding a bicycle along Route 8 near Ingalls Road when she was struck by a 2005 Subaru Impreza driven by Karen Dettman, 59, of Cheshire, according to a preliminary investigation by state Trooper Michael J. Kleiner.
Dettman was northbound on Route 8 when the collision occurred at about 10 p.m. It was not clear from the police report which direction Senger was headed. It also did not state whether she had reflective lights or clothing.
Senger was fatally injured in the crash, according to state police; Dettman was not injured.
Both lanes of Route 8 were closed for approximately three hours and traffic was diverted around the crash scene.
The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Cheshire, Lanesborough and Adams police departments, the Cheshire Fire Department and the Adams Ambulance Service and office of medical examiner assisted troopers at the scene.
