North Adams - MCLA sophomore forward Jess Tietgens (Stamford, VT) continued her scoring ways adding two more goals to her team leading seven in this afternoon's 3-1 win over visiting Mount Holyoke College (1-3).

The Lyons jumped on the board first in the 19th minute on a goal by Jacquelyn Archibald (Marshfield, MA) while Lauren Orr (Fullerton, CA) collected the assist. It took the Trailblazers 17 minutes to answer back when junior back Gaby Fernandez (New Hyde Park, NY) found Tietgens on a through pass for a breakaway and the neutralizer. MCLA played a bit flat in the first half, but the play of goalkeeper Cece Von Tiesenhausen-Hush (Arlington, VT) kept the game close for MCLA.

After the break, MCLA seemed refreshed and picked their game up a notch. The combination of Taylor Kenyon (N. Bennington, VT), Jade Prickett (Westhampton, MA) and Kaitlyn Dano (Schohaire, NY) in the midfield closed down the Lyons' attack. Mount Holyoke did have two very close attempts. The first came half way through the second half off a corner kick, but Maggie Shea (West Springfield, MA) headed the ball out filling in behind Hush. The second came with time winding down and a score of 2-1 in favor of the home team when Prickett hustled back behind Hush to head a sur goal off the line. Both attempts would have been game breakers for the Lyons.

The tie was finally broken in the 72nd minute when again the combination of Fernandez and Tietgens struck. Forward Jackie Nash (Norton, MA) dropped a pass to Fernandez who drove a ball into the box where Tietgens volleyed it right into the goal past a diving Elaine Harvey (Boston, MA). The Trailblazers kept pushing for the third goal and they finally got it six minutes later when they were awarded a throw-in deep in the Lyons half. Prickett launched a throw that was flicked on to by Danielle Parenteau (Southampton, MA) to Kenyon who drove home her first goal of the season and the third goal of the game.

Harvey finished with seven saves and Hush finished with 11 saves.

Both teams are off until Wednesday when MCLA travels to Castleton State College and Mount Holyoke will host Conn College.

SteepleCats' Late Rally Falls Short Against Newport

By Ben McDonoughFor iBerkshires.com
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The North Adams SteepleCats had two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning but could not complete the comeback, falling to the Newport Gulls, 5-1, at Joe Wolfe Field on Tuesday night.

The game got off to a disastrous start for North Adams as Newport scored twice in the opening inning without recording a hit. SteepleCats starter Samuel Formus struggled with his command, issuing three walks to begin the game. A fielder's choice plated the first run before a sacrifice fly from Cole Johnson made it 2-0.

Despite the rocky opening frame, North Adams' pitching staff settled in. Tyler Tedeschi entered in the first inning and immediately escaped further trouble by striking out Mason Ligenza with the bases loaded. Tedeschi then tossed 3 and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and repeatedly working around traffic.

The SteepleCats' offense, meanwhile, was quiet early against Newport starter Burkley Bounds. North Adams did not collect its first hit until the fourth inning.

That spark came off the bat of Evan Meier, who ripped a double that hugged the third-base line and barely stayed fair. One batter later, Nelphie Lopez delivered the SteepleCats' biggest hit of the night, lining an RBI single to right field to score Meier and cut the deficit to 2-1.

The momentum was short-lived, however. Sean Stephenson followed by grounding into his second double play of the evening, ending the threat.

Newport answered in the fifth. Cade Brown singled into left-center field and promptly stole second base. After advancing to third on a flyout, Brown crossed the plate on a passed ball to extend the Gulls' lead to 3-1.
