Ephs Top Western Connecticut, 2-0Williams Sports Info - September 24, 2008
DANBURY, Conn. — Williams College women's soccer took their first big challenge of the season in stride, defeating No. 18 Western Connecticut in a tough midweek contest away from home. Williams continues to impress and improve game in and game out. Having climbed the national rankings each week, the Ephs are currently ranked third in the country and this evening's 2-0 victory proved why.
"We were really excited for this opportunity," said Williams head coach Michelyne Pinard. "It is not every day that you get to play a team that went to the Final Four last year."
The Colonials did not just advance to the Final Four but won their trip to Orlando, Fla., in none other than Williamstown, where the Ephs hosted the sectionals as a top seed. Williams had hoped to compete against Western Connecticut in the sectional finals, but fell short after falling to Hamilton in the third round of the tournament.
Williams took this game as an opportunity and seized it. Freshman Bret Eisenhart scored 15 minutes into the half to give the Ephs a momentum boost, while Brianna Wolfson tallied the second goal just 10 minutes into the next period. Gabrielle Woodson assisted on both plays. Despite being out shot by the Colonials, 10-8, the Ephs were able to convert when it counted.
"Overall, it was a phenomenal game," continued Pinard. "Whatever the result, it was a great competitive match up and we capitalized on the few opportunities they gave us and that was the key."
The Ephs look to continue their hot streak this weekend in their first back-to- back series of games. The team will play Connecticut College on Saturday at noon, and then head up north for a Sunday contest with Colby. |
