Men’s Crew Goes 1-2 in Varsity Fours at Head of the Fish Regatta

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Williams College claimed the top two places in the Collegiate Varsity Men’s Fours. The new Varsity Eight lineup took 5th place. The JV Eight placed 3rd. The top Novice (Freshman) Four placed 1st, and their Eight placed 7th.

It was a mixed day for the Men’s Crew at the Fish, a day for training and experimentation. The Fours races went off well despite a last-minute lineup change. Due to a sudden facial infection, Dan Costanza ’11 was replaced by Crosby Fish ’10 both in the First Varsity Four and in the Varsity Eight.

The course was shortened to just over 3km for the day’s races. The sky was clear, and there was a moderate headwind increasing towards the end of the straight course. The first Four finished with a time of 11:53.65; the second boat was under 5 seconds behind. Both crews defeated entries from the University of Vermont, Amherst College, Middlebury College, and Colgate.

The second Varsity Four experimented successfully with the Italian Rig (seats 2 and 3 are both port and in tandem) and significantly improved their time off the First boat from the Head of the Housatonic. The third Varsity Four, composed of Rowers from the JV squad, finished 19th.

The Ephs in the top two Fours then jumped immediately into the Eights race. With only an hour between the races, the Varsity Eight managed to place 5th despite fatigue and many lineup changes. The crew was 20 seconds behind the first-place Wesleyan crew, and less than 10 seconds off the other top places. Dan Kenefick ’11 comments: “We might not have ended the season on the highest note, but this will place us in the right attitude and mindset for Winter Training.”

Williams’ JV boat finished a strong 3rd place in their category behind Hobart and Colgate.

In the novice category the Williams Four was victorious by a large margin. Coxswain Michelle Mcrae comments: “We talked with Coach Regan about making a statement as the first men's frosh boat to race this fall. As the first boat in the event, we kept our focus on making it the best piece we possibly could. We tried to shave seconds off our time even without nearby boats to work off of. It was a great way to start out the year.”

The Novice Eight finished in 7th place behind four Cornell boats, Hobart, and St. Lawrence.

The Head of the Fish was the conclusion to the Ephs’ fall racing schedule. Tough Winter Training for the Spring Season looms ahead as the work shifts indoors.

Force 16U Defends Home Field with Tourney Title

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires.com Sports
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Berkshire Force 16U travel softball team Sunday rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away for an 8-4 win in the championship game of their Battle of the Berkshires tournament at the Doyle Complex.

Ava McMahon struck out six and gave up just one run after the first inning as the Force completed a 3-0 run through the playoffs after going 1-2 in pool play.

Mollie Crawford, Amelia Polidoro and McMahon each drove in a run in the late rally that finally gave McMahon a little bit of breathing room.

The Force jumped on top early with three runs in the top of the first, but the Nor’Easters out of New Hampshire’s Lakes Region responded right away, tying the game.

In the second, Amaya Alger (3-for-3) singled, moved up on Mackenzie Biros’ sacrifice bunt and scored on a combination stolen base/errant throw to give the Force a 4-3 lead it never relinquished.

But Berkshire missed chances to add to that lead in the third, fourth and fifth, leaving runners in scoring positions in each inning.

Meanwhile, McMahon was brilliant in the circle after a rough first inning, striking out six, walking just one and allowing three earned runs in a complete-game effort.
