Pergolesi's Stabat Mater at St. John's Episcopal Church09:15AM / Friday, November 07, 2008
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass - Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater will be performed on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 4:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Williamstown. This free event is open to the public.
The Evensong service at St. John's Episcopal Church in Williamstown will feature a performance of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's most famous work will be sung by sopranos Sarah Riskind '09 and Katie Yosua '11 and accompanied by Scott Smedinghoff '09 on organ, all music students at Williams College.
Though Pergolesi only lived from 1710 to 1736, he is known as one of the leaders of the galant style, producing significant output in the areas of sacred and secular vocal music. He composed the Stabat Mater in his last year, competing with Alessandro Scarlatti's Stabat Mater setting with the same instrumentation (soprano, alto, strings, and continuo), and it later became the most published work in the 18th century. |
