 | | 'Sunday Night' is being presented at Drury High School Nov. 20 through 22. | NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — The Drury Drama Team takes to the stage to present the world premiere of playwright Stephen Gregg's romantic science fiction work "Sunday Night."
Gregg, named the most popular playwright in America in the short-play category for 14 years by the Educational Theatre Association, selected North Adams to premiere his work.
Dr. Len Radin, district drama coordinator of the North Adams Public Schools, said the team feels honored to have been awarded the privilege of presenting the first official production of this exciting new play. In this story of self-discovery, Whit, a teen-aged girl is transported through time and space and finds herself surrounded by strange creatures. In her struggle to return home, she battles evil forces and confronts her own demons.
Local professional artists have joined North Adams students to create an alien setting for the production, including 10-foot-tall aliens created by David Lane. These creatures appeared in the Fall Foliage Parade and will travel with the team to perform at the Northeast Thespian Festival near Hartford, Conn., in December.
Artists Tiger and Ron Waterman have created an environment on stage composed of set pieces and projected images while drama team alumni Matt McConnell has written original music for the production. Radin said his students were spoke with the playwright by phone from California.
By working with the author in creating this production, the students learned a great deal about the literary aspect of developing a new play. The students' questions to Gregg ranged from general questions about play writing to specific topics such as characterization, plot and theme of his new work.
"Sunday Night" will be presented at Drury High School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 to 22, at 7 p.m. Admission is $6 for students and $9 for adults. For more information see www.drurydrama.com. |
