MCLA Women's Basketball Wins Home Opener09:15AM / Wednesday, November 19, 2008
NORTH ADAMS, Mass - The MCLA (1-0) women's basketball team started off their 2008-2009 campaign with a 86-52 win over visiting St. Joseph College of Connecticut (0-1). The Trailblazers took the lead from the start seeing four players finish in double figures. The Blue Jays tried to keep the game tight but the depth of MCLA's bench kept them at bay.
Leading all scoring for the game was St. Joseph guard Nathalie Mastarreno (Glastonbury, CT) with 16 points in 37 minutes of play. Teammate, Michelle Fillion (Killingworth, CT) added 11 points in the loss. It wasn't enough though as the Trailblazers new-comers showed what they could contribute to a strong returning core. Junior, Ali Leveille (Southampton, MA) lead the way for MCLA with 15 points while dishing out four assists.
Two new faces on the Traiblazer court added to Leveille's efforts with 14 points and four assists by Hillary Perks (Saugerties, NY) and 12 points by Olivia McMullen (Broadalbin, NY). Junior forward Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, NY) rounded out the double figures column with 10 of her own. The Trailblazers leading rebounder for the past two years, Silverman also pulled down 10 rebounds setting the stage for what's to come from her as both a scorer and a dominant rebounder.
The Trailblazers out-rebounded St. Joseph by a 50 to 27 margin. Another bright spot for MCLA was their 89% shooting from the foul line.
Coach McGovern was able to see what each player could bring to the court as she played all 12 of her players seeing 10 in the scoring column. Every player who stepped on the court also made a mark in at least one statistical category.
MCLA will travel this weekend to the Blazer Tip-Off hosted by Elms College. While over the weekend St. Joseph will host the Blue Jay Invitational.
