The Ephs cruised to a 73-50 win over UMass-Boston

BOSTON, Mass. – The Ephs (5-1) cruised to a 73-50 win over Harbor Invitational host UMass-Boston (1-2) on Saturday to claim the tournament championship.  Williams led by as many as 32 points in the first half and was able to get everyone on the bench playing time.

“It was a total team effort this weekend,” said Eph coach Mike Maker, “and we shot 50% from the field for the tournament, which is something we’re capable of doing consistently if we continue running our stuff.”

The Ephs’ defense wasn’t bad either, as they held both opponents to under 40% shooting from the floor.

Partly by design and partly by the way the particular game played out, Williams scoring was much more balanced than it was a day ago. Ethan Timmins-Schiffman (Wilmington, DE) led the Ephs with 14 points, while Eph-leading scorer Kevin Snyder (Littleton, CO) added 12 and sophomore Harlan Dodson (Nashville, TN) netted 11.

Do-it-all swingman Blake Schultz (Atherton, CA) grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Ephs, and also scored 9 points.

“Yesterday we got out rebounded pretty bad by a physical Framingham team,” said Maker, “and I thought we collected ourselves well today and did a better job on the glass.”

Williams out rebounded UMass-Boston 38 to 31.

For the Beacons, the majority of their struggles came in the first half as the Ephs out scored them 39 to 19. UMB played Williams relatively even in the second half though, as the Ephs only won that half by three.

Beacon forward Aaron Jones and Paul Kielb were the only Beacon players to register in double digits, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively.

Regarding the back-to-back double digit victories, Coach Maker had this to say:

“We look at every game like it’s a challenge, you know the Framingham State game [which Williams won by 11 points] was no blow out and neither was the Southern Vermont game [from last week’s Williams Invitational]. Now we’ve gotta go on the road to play Framingham State on their own court on Tuesday and that’ll be another physical game.”

Williams is slated to play at 7:30 Tuesday, as Coach Maker said, against Framingham State.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College Workforce and Community Education graduates were encouraged to be all they can be on Wednesday.

Graduates, families, friends, and staff gathered in Boland Theatre to celebrate around 100 graduates who completed a variety of courses.

They included community health worker, emergency medical technician, phlebotomy technician, registered behavior technician, AI fundamentals, Commercial Drivers License Class A and B, CompTIA Tech-plus, para educator, and English for Speakers of Other Languages.

College President Ellen Kennedy said it was amazing that this might be her last public speaking event before her tenure comes to an end.

She acknowledged the diverse reasons for their studies including career advancement and personal growth, commending their vulnerability and dedication.

"Some of you explored AI, some of you improved your English speaking in really important ways, and the reason that each of you is here is because you decided to put your heart and soul to get vulnerable to do something that might have felt a little bit uncomfortable," she said. "And you did it, and we are so incredibly proud of you, and so happy to be here tonight, celebrating you."

Keynote speaker Shirley Edgerton, founder of Rites of Passage and Empowerment (ROPE) encouraged the graduates to reflect on their accomplishments and look forward to the future.
