WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Williams (3-2-1) wrestling remained on top in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) poll this week after finishing second at the Scott Viera Tourney at Roger Williams University over the weekend without having four members of the team competing.

The Ephs have 133 points on the strength of eight first place votes and Johnson & Wales University (JWU) has 122 points and has received five first place votes. The Ephs also feature eight ranked wrestlers in the region's 10 weight classifications, which ties a program best established earlier this season.

Senior captain Ethan Cohen at 125 had a big weekend as he notched his 100th career win, won the Most Outstanding Lower Weight Wrestler Award at the Scott Viera Tourney hosted by Roger Williams University and earned the NEWA Wrestler of the Week Award. Cohen is just the third Eph to reach the 100-win plateau joining Jamall Pollock (104) and Tom Prairie (106).

"To get 100 wins in a career means you are doing a lot of things right and that wrestling is important to you year round," commented co-head coach Dan DiCenzo. "To get that win halfway through your senior year is really impressive."

Of the eight Ephs ranked in New England six are in the top three and two are number one. Corey Paulish at 141 and Ryan Malo moved ahead of Bryan Lenhardt of JWU at 184. Lenhardt is a returning All-American who finished sixth in the nation last season and is currently undefeated.

"Malo and Lenhardt are two of the best wrestlers in all of New England," said DiCenzo. "Ryan has 17 wins on 14 pins and he beat the number four-ranked (nationally) 197 wrestler in Iowa. Malo and Lenhardt will get to prove who is best on the mat at the New England Duals (Jan. 18) and at the NECCA Tournament in February.

Ethan Cohen (125) and Carl Breitenstein (157 are both ranked second in New England, while captains Dylan Rittenburg (149) and Kyle Ayer (197) are ranked third. Jon Foster is tied for fifth at 165 and Josh Mattana is sixth at 133.

This weekend the Ephs expect to have their full lineup competing. On Saturday, January 10th the Ephs will travel to WPI where they will take on WPI, MIT, Trinity and the University of Southern Maine.

Companion Corner: Lucy at Second Chance Animal Shelter

By Breanna SteeleiBerkshires Staff

ARLINGTON, Vt. — There is an excited and energetic pup looking for her new family.

iBerkshire's Companion Corner is a weekly series spotlighting an animal in our local shelters that is ready to find a home.

Lucy is an 18-month-old heeler/terrier mix with energy to spare. She has been at the Second Chance Animal Shelter for about a month.

Lead canine care technician Alaura Lasher introduced us to her.

"She is a very energetic girl. She loves to play, and as you can see, she came to us from animal control," she said.

Lucy was not in a great situation before coming to the shelter and they are still trying to learn more about her.

"They had seized her from a pretty neglectful situation. She was actually technically abandoned. She just came to us this last month, so she's still showing us all of her energy she has," Lasher said.

Lucy is able to go home with a dog-savvy cat and older children as she can be a bit jumpy with her bounds of energy.

"The perfect home for her is one that is able to give her a ton of attention and a ton of time playing, she loves her time outside," said Lasher. "She can run forever and not get tired. She can possibly live with another dog who is used to more of a pushy play style. She can be a little pushy when she plays, just because she's so hyper."

Since she is young, she is still learning and training with the staff and might need more with someone who takes her home.

"To the best of our knowledge, she's just a healthy young girl, because she's only a year and a half old, she still got a little bit of learning and training that she could use."

But Lucy is always happy to see anyone and immediately wants to play and say hi. Her endless energy makes her a great companion to play outside with and then hang out after a long day of fun.

"She's just a super sweet girl again. She'll need some help with the training, but as long as you've got time to burn out her energy, she'll make a great family dog," she said.

If you think Lucy might be the girl for you, reach out to Second Chance Animal Shelter and learn more about her on their website.
