The Ephs' Track & Field, Season Opener at Syracuse
01:48PM / Monday, January 19, 2009
In their opening meet the Ephs got out to a fairly good start at the Syracuse Welcome Back Invitational meet. Not all of the Eph ladies were in competition this weekend, some were still in training and others were not participating due to injury.
Overall in events the Ephs did compete in they performed well and held their own over standout Division I athletes. In the field events Madeline Watson '12 placed high in the shot put and the weight throw. Heading over to the sand jumpers Sara Turner ‘11 and Karyn Moss '12 took 3rd and 4th place finishes respectively for the Ephs in the triple jump, both jumping over 35 feet.
The sprinters came out strong on the track, Coach Joel Williams stated "...the sprinters looked very good for this point in the season with the women just starting to feel the effects of tough early season training, and very little event specific training. "The short sprinters managed to pick up some qualifiers." Those sprinters being Shawna McArdle '10 and Hillary Higgs '12 both qualifying for the finals of the 55m dash. Higgs came out with a 4th place finish in the 55m dash and a 3rd place finish in the 200m with times of 7.61 in the 55m and 26.7 in the 200m.
On the mid-distance side of things Nora Mitchell ‘10 took first in the 800m with a time of 2:22:84.
All in all the Ephs seem to be looking ahead to a promising season with one meet down and twelve to go.
