Women's Basketball: Westfield wins' over MCLA 61 - 50

MCLA Sports Info
08:45AM / Wednesday, February 11, 2009

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Westfield State (19-3, 10-0) used a 11 to 5 run with just under four minutes to play to remain undefeated in the MASCAC defeating their host 61-50. The MASCAC's leading scorer Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, MA) led the way for the Owls finishing with a team high 15 points. Senior, Katie Sylvain (Hadley, MA) added 14 points in the 61-50 win.

In the first half Westfield built a nine-point lead with nine minutes left before the break. Slowly the Trailblazers chipped away at that lead behind ten points from first-year center Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, MA). With three minutes left and eight straight points by Wehner and Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, NY), MCLA took a one point 28-27 lead at the half.

In the second half it seemed as if the Owls focus turned to shutting down Wehner's dominance on the boards on both ends. Although she finished with a game high 16 points, she was held to six points in the second half. The Trailblazers held a lead that was five points at most until Westfield locked things up at 40 with nine minutes remaining. Slowly the Owls built a lead that bounded back and forth between four and six. With just over three minutes left, Cassy Jouannett's (Conway, MA) hoop started a 11 to 5 run for the Owls that sealed the game.

It was only the fourth time this season that the Trailblazers were out-rebounded. Wehner earned her 11th double-double of the season and third in a row as she added 11 rebounds to her 16 points. Silverman lead all rebounding with 12 and with her 10 points it would be her eighth double-double of the season. Averaging 11 rebounds per game, Silverman and Wehner continue to lead the MASCAC.

Up Next:

Saturday 2/14, MCLA (13-9, 3-6) will travel to Framingham State (8-14, 2-8) for a 1:00 game.
