Norman Rockwell Museum Announces March Programs and Events

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. - Norman Rockwell Museum offers an exciting month of programs and exhibitions for families, artists, and art lovers. On March 14, the Museum takes part in the Berkshire-wide "Women in the Arts Festival," with a special program on fantasy art titled "Flights of Fantasy: Women, Myth, and Image."

This month is also the last chance for visitors to take advantage of the Museum's popular Free Tuesdays program. Free admission to the Museum continues each Tuesday this month, wrapping up on Tuesday, March 31. On Tuesday, March 10, visitors can enjoy both free admission and a free performance by musician JoAnne Spies.

Events

Focus on Illustration
"Flights of Fantasy: Women, Myth, and Image"
Saturday, March 14, 1 to 4 p.m.

Discover the fascinating world of fantasy art. Ruth Sanderson, illustrator and author of "The Golden Mare, the Firebird and the Magic Ring," and "The Snow Princess," will speak about depictions of women in fairy tales and myths. The program also includes a tour of the exhibition "Artists in Their Studios," an adult hands-on art workshop, and a talk by art collectors Robert and Lynne Horvath. Illustrator Lynn Pauley will also be on hand with a presentation titled "The Visual American," and a gallery talk will be presented on Norman Rockwell's depictions of women in roles of strength. The program is presented in partnership with the "Women in the Arts Festival," organized by Bard College at Simon's Rock. Free with Museum admission.

Reading Rockwell
Sundays, 3:30 p.m.

Join special guests as they read selections from Norman Rockwell's autobiography, "My Adventures as an Illustrator," surrounded by the artist's work. Free with Museum admission.

Workshops

Art in Action
Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m.

These Sunday afternoon drop-in art workshops focus on family fun and hands-on adventure, inspired by the art of Norman Rockwell and other illustrators. Free for children. Adults free with Museum admission.

Toddler Tuesdays
Three, Four, and Two, Too!
March 3, 10:30 a.m.

Designed for preschool children and their adult friends, this multi-sensory learning experience features an age-appropriate gallery tour and a fun hands-on art project. Part of Free Tuesdays at the Museum. Program fee $6 per child/adult pair; $4 for Museum members. Each additional child $3.

Model Citizens

"Performance: A Museum Exhibition as Musical Inspiration"
Tuesday, March 10, 1:30 p.m.
Join musician JoAnne Spies for a creative performance inspired by work featured in the Museum's recent exhibitions. Free with Museum admission.

Exhibitions

"Artists in Their Studios"
On view through May 25, 2009

This photographic exhibition presents a unique glimpse into the lives and work spaces of more than 75 American artists from the late 19th century to today. From John Singer Sargent and Willem deKooning to Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, this exhibition offers an intimate perspective on a century of important artists at work. A special gallery exploring some of the many studios Rockwell occupied during his lifetime complements the exhibition.

Learn more about the faces behind the pictures in this special off-site exhibition of reference photos depicting Norman Rockwell's models in action. Free admission.

Admission Details

Norman Rockwell Museum is open daily. General public admission is $15 for adults, $13.50 for seniors, $10 for college students, and free for visitors 18 and under (five per adult). Kids Free Every Day is a gift to families from Country Curtains, Blantyre, and The Red Lion Inn. This winter, the Museum welcomes visitors with free admission on Tuesdays. Weekday hours from November through April are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and weekend/holiday hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Orientation talks are available daily, beginning on the hour. Antenna Audio Tour of select paintings from the Museum's permanent Norman Rockwell collection is available.
