WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams College Dance Program explores some of Ireland's greatest women — imposters, soldiers, pirates, fairies, healers, lovers, witches, artists, queens and saints — in a new work choreographed by artistic director Holly Silva.
"Eire na Mna" ("Ireland of the Women") features live music and singers on the CenterStage of the '62 Center for Dance and Theatre on March 13 and 14 at 8 p.m.
"Dancing at the crossroads" is how Ronadh Cox, associate professor of geosciences and Inish musician, describes the tradition in her native Ireland of dance and music performed with a spontaneous flow. The synergistic exchange of ideas made possible within an informal setting is also a distinctive feature of Inish, now in its fifth year. As with many performing ensembles at Williams, the Inish creative process is a patchwork of who-can-do-what-when, and what audiences experience is, in fact, much more like a crossroads dance than one might imagine. Whether out of necessity or design, this joining together creates a "collective adrenaline" that drives the performances to, at times, unexpected places.
There will be postperformance reception, free and open to the public, after March 13 performance. The reception will be catered by Spice Root.
Tickets are $3; for tickets and information, call 413-597-2425 on Tuesday through Saturday 1 to 5 and one hour before each performance or visit http://62center.williams.edu/.
