NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The Spring 2009 “Green Living” seminars and workshops hosted by The Berkshire Environmental Resource Center (BERC) at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) will continue on Thursday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. with a workshop on “Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes: Protecting soil, water and biodiversity” in Murdock Hall conference room 218.
The public is invited to attend this free series, “Good Food: Sustainable Agriculture for the 21st Century.” The aim of the series is to inform students and the community about why and how to increase the sustainability of our food system. Participants will learn about ways of directly contributing to improving agricultural sustainability through hands-on workshops on green gardening techniques. No reservation is required.
This “Sustainable Agricultural Landscapes” presentation will be given by Sarah Taylor Lovell, assistant professor at the University of Vermont, who will discuss how landscapes must be multifunctional to improve their ability to provide important ecosystem services. This presentation will address opportunities for sustainable and multifunctional landscape design in agricultural landscapes.
Lovell's research focuses on the design and analysis of sustainable landscapes in intensively-managed urban and agricultural systems. She holds a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agronomy from the University of Illinois. For more information, go to www.mcla.edu or contact Elena Traister, (413) 662-5303.
