Buzzards Bay, Mass. — Salem State College senior center Dylan Holmes has been named as the 2008-09 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight season and heads the league’s all-conference squad in a vote taken of the conference’s seven coaches. A native of Groton, Mass., Holmes averaged 19.1 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per contest during the regular season in repeating as Player of the Year and leading the Vikings to a share of the MASCAC regular season crown with a 20-5 overall mark, including a 10-2 league slate.

Holmes’ Salem State teammate, freshman guard/forward Brian Clark (Deerfield, Mass.), was tabbed as the 2008-09 MASCAC Rookie of the Year after averaging eight points and five rebounds during his inaugural collegiate campaign.

Bridgewater State College’s Joe Farroba and Salem State’s Chris Harvey shared the honor of 2008-09 MASCAC Co-Coaches of the Year. Farroba led the Bears to an 18-6 mark during the regular season, while Harvey’s Vikings take a 20-5 record into the post-season, and the two squads shared the MASCAC regular season title with identical 10-2 conference marks.

Holmes was joined on the 2008-09 MASCAC first-team all-conference squad by Bridgewater State’s Roland Millien, Worcester State’s Maurice Horton, Framingham State’s Josue Almodovar, Westfield State’s Dave Jaehnig and Salem State teammate Stevie Celestin. The 2008-09 MASCAC second-team all-conference squad consisted of Framingham State’s Roderick Jackson, Bridgewater State’s Judah Jackson and Nicholas Motta, Fitchburg State’s Brian Torres, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts’ Jon Greenberg and Westfield State’s Brandon Mauer.

Greenberg MCLA's sophomore center averaged 14.4 points per game and led the MASCAC in rebounding with an average of 11.4 per game. Greenberg a graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth High School also placed 4th in the conference in Blocked Shots. MCLA Freshman Chris Harris (Dorchester, MA/John D. O'Bryant High School) finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year Voting. Harris averaged 8.7 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Harris started 23 of the 24 games he played in and led all MASCAC first year players in seven of the eleven statistical categories kept by the league.

Now celebrating its 38th year, the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference is comprised of eight NCAA Division III member institutions: Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College.

Pittsfield Council Passes $232.7M Budget

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council unanimously approved a $232.7 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. 

It is a modest, almost 2.9 percent increase from FY26. 

"I do want to give the community kind of a heads up as we move forward on budgets. What we see coming out of the federal government that's trickling down to the states, it's going to be harder and harder for us as a community to meet our needs under the Proposition 2 1/2," Councilor at Large Alisa Costa said. 

"We're going to have challenges, as we've seen communities across the state trying to override the Proposition 2 1/2, because we have dwindling amounts of money coming from the state and federal government." 

She pointed out that, at the same time, utility bills are going up for both residents and the city, as are the costs of pavement and other items. 

The amended budget of $232,777,720, down from the $232,782,090 originally proposed, includes cuts to the Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the restoration of funds for councilors to attend the annual Massachusetts Municipal Association conference. 

The Pittsfield Public Schools' $86,855,061 budget includes $68,886,061 in state Chapter 70 funding and $18 million from the city. With $345,000 in school choice and Richmond tuition revenues, it totals $87,200,061 and is an approximately $300,000 increase from the Pittsfield Public Schools' FY26 budget of $86.9 million. 

The district's budget will fund 13 schools, as Morningside Community School will retire in the fall, and includes the middle school restructuring. 

Councilors also approved the use of $2 million in certified free cash to reduce the tax rate, and appropriated $450,551 for parking-related expenditures.
